Trip Overview: Mammoth to June Ski Traverse
This guided Mammoth to June Ski Traverse is an ideal introduction to backcountry touring in California’s Eastern Sierra. The skiing is moderate, the terrain varied, and the scenery absolutely spectacular. In summer, the Thousand Island Lake and Agnew Pass area draws backpackers—yet in winter, it’s silent, wild, and even more stunning under a blanket of snow.
Prerequisites
- Fitness: You should be fit and prepared for three full 8-10 hour days
- Advanced resort skills: You should be an expert skier or snowboarder at the resort level, confident on ungroomed terrain and in variable, challenging conditions.
- Experience: Previous backcountry touring experience on day trips is required
- Avalanche education strongly recommended
- Skills: Proficiency with kick turns, traversing up to 30° slopes, side slipping, and wedge turns while carrying a 35-45 lb pack
- No overnight winter camping experience required

Acclimatization & Physical Training
For proper acclimatization, we recommend spending at least one night at a moderate elevation (above 8,000 feet) before the trip begins. This allows your body to adjust to higher altitude and can help make hiking feel more comfortable.
See our Fitness, Training & Acclimatization Tips for detailed guidance on how to prepare.
Gear
You’ll need standard ski touring gear (skis with touring bindings or a splitboard, climbing skins, boots), avalanche safety gear (beacon, probe, shovel), and appropriate clothing for winter mountain travel.
We provide group gear such as emergency equipment and communication devices. If you don’t have avalanche safety gear, we offer beacons, shovels, and probes for rent for $10 each. Skis and splitboards can be rented locally from Mammoth Mountaineering Supply.
Check out our full equipment list for complete details on what to bring.

Day 1
We start at Mammoth Mountain’s Main Lodge and quickly leave the bustle of the ski area behind, skinning up Minaret Road to Minaret Vista (9,150 ft)—a gentle approach that lets everyone adjust gear and ease into the rhythm of the traverse. After lunch at the viewpoint, we enjoy a fun descent to Agnew Meadows, where we leave the road and climb through quiet aspen and pine forest to our camp at 8,800 feet. As evening settles in, we watch the sun set behind the jagged Minarets—a spectacular start to the journey.
Day 2
We climb steadily through forest and open meadows toward Agnew Pass (9,900 ft), gaining elevation and sweeping views of the surrounding peaks. With several steep traverses, this can be a challenging day depending on snow and weather conditions. We camp near Thousand Island Lake beneath the dramatic north face of Mount Banner, a stunning alpine setting and a rewarding milestone on the traverse.
Day 3
The day begins with sweeping views of the Ritter–Banner Range and the Sierra Crest before we descend to frozen Gem Lake, cross the dam, and continue down to Agnew Lake. From a small rise, we catch our first glimpse of June Lake below. A steady descent along Rush Creek brings us to the road near Silver Lake (7,300 ft), where our shuttle van awaits to take us back to Mammoth—and a well-deserved rest after an unforgettable traverse.

Reviews
Michael, AIARE II
“Hey all! I recently took AIARE 2 with SP Parker and I have to admit it was fantastic! He showed so much passion for his craft and “patience” with us. It truly showed in the 3 days we spent together that he cares about what he does. He is so knowledgeable about snow science and in particular Eastern Sierra snow that I highly recommend participating in his course if you’re a frequenter of this magical mountain range. Can’t thank you enough and will most surely use the lessons learned in this course to be a more safe and conscious backcountry traveler.”

“Anouk was a terrific educator and guide during the avy rescue clinic- very experienced. Good natured and supportive. Expertly managed our group. We all got a ton of practice and had a nice day out in the field. I’ll be coming back for more avy training.”
Stefanos, AIARE I
“I got my avalanche education here (AIARE1). The team I met, Anouk, Tyler and Emma, is fantastic. I greatly appreciated their attitude and the experience they provided. Will be back for more soon.”
