Trip Overview: Backcountry Ski & Cabin Adventure
Stay in a cozy backcountry cabin while enjoying guided backcountry skiing in the Eastern Sierra. In partnership with Parcher’s Resort, Sierra Mountain Center is offering an intimate, small-group experience designed for skiers who want to combine rewarding touring with the comfort of a cozy mountain basecamp.
Your journey begins with a scenic 3.5-mile ski along a snow-covered road to a private cabin nestled just below the South Lake trailhead. Reserved exclusively for our group, the cabin provides a warm and welcoming retreat after each day in the mountains. While intentionally rustic — with no running water or electricity — it features comfortable beds and a wood-burning stove, creating the perfect atmosphere for relaxed evenings, shared meals, and stories from the skin track.
Over the next two days, you’ll explore the expansive terrain surrounding South Lake with an experienced, certified ski guide. This zone offers a variety of rewarding tours, from mellow powder fields to classic Eastern Sierra descents. Weather and conditions permitting, ambitious objectives such as Hurd Peak may even be within reach.
Each day is thoughtfully paced to balance adventure with restoration, giving you time to enjoy both the skiing and the serenity of traveling through a true winter landscape.
On the final morning, we’ll savor one last tour before skiing back down the quiet winter road, returning to civilization refreshed, accomplished, and filled with the kind of memories only winter in the Sierra can provide.
Itinerary
Day 1 – Orientation & Ski to Cabin
Meet at the SMC office for a gear check and trip orientation before traveling to the winter road closure on South Lake Road near the Habegger’s neighborhood. From there, we’ll ski approximately 3.5 miles with 900 feet of elevation gain along the snow-covered road to our cozy backcountry cabin.
Days 2–3 – Ski Touring from the Cabin
We’ll spend the next two days exploring the surrounding terrain, selecting daily objectives based on weather, avalanche conditions, and group goals. With a variety of options nearby, guides will tailor each day to maximize both safety and fun while helping you build skills and confidence in the winter backcountry.
Day 4 – Return Ski
After a final morning at the cabin, we’ll ski back down South Lake Road to the winter closure. Depending on logistics, our vehicles will either be staged there or a shuttle will meet us for the return to town.

Prerequisites
This trip is designed for experienced, confident backcountry skiers and splitboarders who are comfortable traveling in winter mountain terrain and ready for multiple full days of human-powered skiing. Participants should meet the following guidelines:
Backcountry Experience:: Prior backcountry skiing or splitboarding experience is required. You should be familiar with uphill travel using skins, efficient transitions, and spending long days in a winter environment.
Advanced Skiing Ability: You are a strong, controlled skier or rider in ungroomed terrain and variable snow conditions including powder, windboard, crust, and steeps.
Fitness: Expect full days of movement covering approximately 4–8 miles with 2,000–4,000+ feet of elevation gain while carrying an overnight pack on the approach and a day pack during tours.
Mountain Preparedness: Travel takes place at high elevation in a remote setting. Arriving well-conditioned and acclimatized will help you travel efficiently and maximize your enjoyment.
Our guides thoughtfully select routes based on weather, snowpack, and group ability — but all participants should arrive prepared for a physically demanding and rewarding backcountry experience.
Gear
You’ll need standard ski touring gear (skis with touring bindings or a splitboard, climbing skins, boots), avalanche safety gear (beacon, probe, shovel), and appropriate clothing for winter mountain travel.
We provide group gear such as emergency equipment and communication devices. If you don’t have avalanche safety gear, we offer beacons, shovels, and probes for rent for $10 each. Skis and splitboards can be rented locally from Mammoth Mountaineering Supply.

How to prepare for Backcountry Skiing
During your trip, we’ll spend several hours outdoors in cold, windy, or potentially inclement weather. To stay comfortable and safe, make sure to bring plenty of extra layers to adapt to changing conditions. Check out our full equipment list for details.
To help your body adjust to the altitude, we recommend spending at least one night at a moderate elevation (above 8,000 feet) before the course begins. For more guidance on acclimatization, conditioning, and how to get ready for your trip, please review our Training and Acclimatization Resource here.

Reviews
Michael, AIARE II
“Hey all! I recently took AIARE 2 with SP Parker and I have to admit it was fantastic! He showed so much passion for his craft and “patience” with us. It truly showed in the 3 days we spent together that he cares about what he does. He is so knowledgeable about snow science and in particular Eastern Sierra snow that I highly recommend participating in his course if you’re a frequenter of this magical mountain range. Can’t thank you enough and will most surely use the lessons learned in this course to be a more safe and conscious backcountry traveler.”
