Trip Overview: Family Backcountry Adventure
Bring the whole family for a backpacking trip in the Eastern Sierra! Our experienced guides make it fun, safe, and exciting for kids and adults alike. After a short 3-mile hike to our cozy basecamp at Long Lake, you can explore a nearby peak, cross a scenic pass, or do both—your family chooses the adventure!
It’s the perfect way to bond, explore, and spark a love of the outdoors in every member of your family.
This trip is designed for ages 10 and up. If your child is younger, give us a call—we’ll do our best to accommodate. Our goal is to get kids outside and enjoying the mountains, and we’ll work with you to make it happen!

What to Expect on a Family Backpacking Trip
On Day 1, packs are typically 30–35 pounds as we carry tents, sleeping bags, food, and other gear into camp. To make things easier, we can hire porters to help carry gear. When we plan your trip, we’ll work with you to decide how many porters are needed based on your group size and how much everyone wants to carry.
During our day hikes, you’ll only need a small daypack with essentials like water, snacks, and a jacket, weighing around 5–10 pounds.
Is a Family Backpacking Trip Right for your Family?
No prior backpacking experience is required, but everyone should be in good physical shape and ready for a few active days outdoors. Our trips are designed with families in mind — the pace is manageable for kids and parents, with plenty of breaks and support from our professional guides.
If you and your children enjoy hiking, spending time in nature, and are comfortable carrying a backpack, you’ll fit right in. We’ll teach you the skills you need along the way, from setting up camp to Leave No Trace principles, so you don’t need to be experts before you arrive.
Porters
We offer porter support on this trip to help make things easier for families. A porter can carry some of your gear on the hike in, the hike out, or both. This lightens your load so you and your kids can focus on enjoying the trail instead of carrying heavy packs. Porters can carry up to 40 lbs of gear. The cost is $300 per porter per day. Contact us before or after you book your trip to add a porter.
Acclimatization & Physical Training
For proper acclimatization, we recommend spending at least one night at a moderate elevation (above 8,000 feet) before the trip begins. This allows your body to adjust to higher altitude and can help make hiking feel more comfortable.
See our Fitness, Training & Acclimatization Tips for detailed guidance on how to prepare.

What age is best for a family backpacking trip?
Our trips are designed for kids 10 years and older, but every family is different. If your child is younger, give us a call — we’ll do our best to accommodate.
What if my kid has never backpacked before?
No problem! No prior backpacking experience is required. Our guides teach you everything you need to know — from setting up camp to Leave No Trace principles.
How heavy will my child's pack be?
Kids usually carry a light daypack (5–10 lbs) with just water, snacks, and a jacket. Adults typically carry more, but if anyone in the family would like a lighter load, porters are available to help carry gear. When we plan your trip, we’ll work with you to decide how many porters are needed so everyone feels comfortable.
Do you provide camping gear, or should we bring our own?
We provide shared group gear such as cooking supples and tents. You can rent personal gear (like backpacks and sleeping bags) from a local shop if needed. You’re also welcome to bring your own.
What happens if the weather turns bad?
The Sierra Nevada often has sunny, beautiful weather, but conditions can change. Our guides are trained to adjust the itinerary, keep everyone safe, and make sure your family still has a great trip.
Day 1: Hike to Long Lake Basecamp
We’ll meet at our office in Bishop, CA at 8:00 am for an equipment review and to pick up any last-minute items. From there, we’ll head to the South Lake trailhead and begin our short hike into the wilderness. Our destination is a scenic basecamp near Long Lake, where we’ll settle in and learn the basics of backcountry camping. From choosing a campsite to setting up tents—and plenty of fun camp activities along the way—your family will get a hands-on introduction to life in the Sierra.
2.5 miles, 1,000′ of elevation gain
Days 2-3: Day Hikes
There are plenty of options for day hikes in this beautiful area. If your family wants to enjoy both hikes, plan for a 4-day adventure. If you’d like to do just one hike, the trip can be completed in 3 days. Day hike options include:
Chocolate Peak
A fun, family-friendly peak with sparkling lakes and wildflower-filled alpine meadows along the way. From the summit, enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding granite peaks.
- 4 miles and 1,200′ elevation gain
Bishop Pass
Follow the trail up to Bishop Pass and stand right on the border of Kings Canyon National Park. From the top, take in breathtaking views of Dusy Basin, the Palisades, and the high Sierra all around.
- 7 miles round trip and 1,400′ elevation gain
Lake Day
If you’d rather keep things mellow, spend the day at camp relaxing by the lake. Go for a swim, try some fishing, or simply soak in the views while the kids explore and play around camp.
Day 3 or 4: Exit day
After breakfast at camp, we’ll pack up our gear and begin the scenic hike back to the South Lake trailhead. Along the way, we’ll take time to enjoy the mountain views one last time and reflect on the adventures we shared together.
Back at the trailhead, we’ll say our goodbyes before heading back to Bishop. You’ll leave with great memories, new skills, and (hopefully!) a spark for more backcountry adventures as a family.

Reviews
Durs, John Muir Trail 2025
“The trip exceeded my expectations in that everything and everyone was perfect. The support during the trip and the support given to the guides was excellent…Madeline and Kanyon gave exceptional personal service for 26 days! That is extremely hard to do. They cooked us wonderful breakfast, lunch and dinners for 25 days and satisfied all of us hikers…The best thing I can say about them is that both are the most capable outdoor experts I know (Dave is in this group too). I can’t think of any negatives to the greatest service they provided.”
Becky, Sky Marathon 2025
“Your service exceeded my expectations. This was my first backpacking trip and I felt well prepared in large part to your online resources (training plan, equipment list, route description). Heather was awesome – set a careful pace and was patient and personable…She kept us safe with tips and reminders throughout the trip. I appreciated her reviewing our equipment before we left and teaching me how to pack my bag and set up a tent.”
Paul, Evolution Loop Backpacking Trip
“I went on the 6-day Evolution Loop backpacking trip. I had the time of my life. The scenery was stunningly beautiful. Our guides kept us safe, prepared excellent meals, and were very knowledgeable about the area. They were friendly and kept us informed about what to expect each day. I only wish the trip lasted more days. I’ll be back for more.”
