Day 1 - Mammoth to Shadow Lake
We meet in Mammoth to review gear and trip logistics, then head to the trailhead at Agnew Meadows. From here, we follow the River Trail along the rushing San Joaquin River. After passing Olaine Lake, the trail climbs toward Shadow Lake, offering stunning views of the jagged Minarets and the towering summits of Mount Ritter and Mount Banner. We make camp above Shadow Lake near Shadow Creek, keeping the first day short to ease into the journey.
Starting elevation: 8,300 ft
Ending elevation: 9,000 ft
Distance: 4.5 miles with 1,100 ft gain / 400 ft loss
Day 2 – Shadow Lake to Rush Creek
We continue north, paralleling the San Joaquin River and passing some of the Sierra’s most beautiful lakes—each aptly named after a precious gem: Ruby, Garnet, and Emerald—before reaching the incomparable Thousand Island Lake. We take time to wander along its shoreline, soaking in the views of Mount Banner, before climbing gently over Island Pass. From there, we descend into Rush Creek and make camp near the forks of the creek.
Starting elevation: 9,000 ft
Ending elevation: 9,500 ft
Distance: 8.0 miles with 2,000 ft gain / 1,500 ft loss
Day 3 – Rush Creek to Lyell Canyon
Today brings our biggest pass of the trip, though the climb is steady and not too long. With lighter packs, we ascend over Donohue Pass and drop into the broad expanse of Lyell Canyon. Towering above us is Mount Lyell, the highest peak in Yosemite National Park. From the pass, we follow a gentle descent into the wide, glacially carved valley and make camp near the Tuolumne River at the base of Lyell Canyon.
Starting elevation: 9,500 ft
Ending elevation: 8,800 ft
Distance: 8.0 miles with 1,500 ft gain / 2,200 ft loss
Day 4 – Lyell Canyon to Tuolumne Meadows
It’s all downhill today as we follow the trail through Lyell Canyon toward Tuolumne Meadows. The Lyell Fork of the Tuolumne River winds gently beside us, reflecting the peaks and meadows of the high country as it flows toward the valley. By afternoon, we reach Tuolumne Meadows and meet our shuttle for the return trip to Mammoth—tired, happy, and ready for a well-earned rest.
Starting elevation: 8,800 ft
Ending elevation: 8,500 ft
Distance: 8.0 miles with 200 ft gain / 500 ft loss

Reviews
Durs, John Muir Trail 2025
“The trip exceeded my expectations in that everything and everyone was perfect. The support during the trip and the support given to the guides was excellent…Madeline and Kanyon gave exceptional personal service for 26 days! That is extremely hard to do. They cooked us wonderful breakfast, lunch and dinners for 25 days and satisfied all of us hikers…The best thing I can say about them is that both are the most capable outdoor experts I know (Dave is in this group too). I can’t think of any negatives to the greatest service they provided.”
Becky, Sky Marathon 2025
“Your service exceeded my expectations. This was my first backpacking trip and I felt well prepared in large part to your online resources (training plan, equipment list, route description). Heather was awesome – set a careful pace and was patient and personable…She kept us safe with tips and reminders throughout the trip. I appreciated her reviewing our equipment before we left and teaching me how to pack my bag and set up a tent.”
Paul, Evolution Loop Backpacking Trip
“I went on the 6-day Evolution Loop backpacking trip. I had the time of my life. The scenery was stunningly beautiful. Our guides kept us safe, prepared excellent meals, and were very knowledgeable about the area. They were friendly and kept us informed about what to expect each day. I only wish the trip lasted more days. I’ll be back for more.”
