Job Title: AIARE Instructor & Course Leader
Location: Mammoth Lakes, California
Wage: Based on certifications & experience (AIARE Course Leaders starting at $400/day and AIARE Instructors starting at $325/day)
Job Overview:
Sierra Mountain Center is seeking experienced AIARE Instructors & Course Leaders to join our team for the 2025-2026 avalanche education season. This role involves instructing AIARE Level I, AIARE Level II, and AIARE Avalanche Rescue Courses, with potential for additional ski guiding opportunities for guides with AMAG Ski certifications. We are looking for passionate educators and skilled backcountry leaders who can manage groups in challenging winter environments while delivering top-tier avalanche education.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver engaging, high-quality AIARE classroom and field instruction in both in-person and virtual settings.
- Lead groups through a variety of backcountry ski and splitboard terrain, adapting to changing conditions and participant needs.
- Foster a safe, inclusive, and educational environment for all participants.
- Assess terrain, snowpack, and weather to manage risk in alignment with SMC protocols.
- Collaborate with fellow guides and instructors during A.M. meetings, trip planning, and debriefs.
- Represent Sierra Mountain Center’s commitment to professionalism, safety, and client experience.
Minimum Requirements:
- AIARE Course Leader or Instructor Completion
- Wilderness First Responder (WFR) or higher medical certification.
- CPR certification (current).
- Current A3 (American Avalanche Association) membership.
- Strong backcountry ski or splitboard skills meeting or exceeding AMGA movement and fitness standards.
- Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather while maintaining instructional quality.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, manage risk, and communicate effectively in a group setting.
Preferred Qualifications:
- AMGA Apprentice Ski or Splitboard Guide or higher certification.
- 2+ seasons of teaching AIARE curriculum.
- 2+ years of professional guiding experience.
- Familiarity with the Sierra Nevada backcountry, especially Eastern Sierra terrain.
- Leave No Trace Trainer or Master Educator credential.
