Trip Overview: Blue Lake Backcountry Basecamp
Our Blue Lake Yoga + Backpacking Retreat blends scenic hiking with intentional time to slow down and reconnect in the High Sierra. Beginning at Lake Sabrina, we hike to Blue Lake and establish a comfortable basecamp surrounded by granite peaks and clear alpine waters.
Mornings start with meditation and lakeside yoga, while evenings offer gentle, restorative sessions to help you unwind after the day’s adventures. Spend your time relaxing by the lake, enjoying an alpine swim, journaling, or joining a scenic day hike to nearby favorites like Hungry Packer, Moonlight, Baboon, Donkey, Sunset, and Topsy Turvy Lakes.
Perfect for friends, couples, solo travelers, and those newer to backpacking, this trip offers a supportive pace with the option to explore or simply soak in the mountain atmosphere.

Meeting Location
We’ll meet at the Sierra Mountain Center office in Bishop for our gear check and trip orientation. Meeting here makes it easy to pick up any last-minute items from nearby stores before heading to the trailhead. We’ll be in touch with detailed meeting instructions and logistics after you register for the trip.
Acclimatization & Physical Training
For proper acclimatization, we recommend spending at least one night at a moderate elevation (above 8,000 feet) before the trip begins. This allows your body to adjust to higher altitude and can help make hiking feel more comfortable.
See our Fitness, Training & Acclimatization Tips for detailed guidance on how to prepare.

Day 1 – Hike to Blue Lake Basecamp
We’ll meet at our Bishop office for a gear check and to divide group equipment. Once everyone is ready, we’ll caravan to the Sabrina Lake trailhead. The trail begins with a gentle path above the shoreline before climbing gradually toward the upper basin. There are plenty of scenic spots to pause and take in views of the lake and surrounding peaks. Before long, we’ll arrive at Blue Lake, where we’ll set up our basecamp for the trip.
Starting elevation: 9,100 ft
Ending elevation: 10,400 ft
Distance: 3 miles with 1,300 ft gain
Day 2 – Exploration & Lakeside Yoga
Options for the day abound! We’ll begin the morning with a guided meditation followed by a lakeside yoga session — a peaceful way to wake up in the mountains.
From there, choose your own pace for the day. Enjoy a relaxing morning at camp with an optional alpine swim, quiet rest, or time for journaling beside the lake. For those eager to explore farther, we’ll head out on a scenic day hike to Donkey Lake and Sunset Lake, taking in the beauty of this high alpine basin along the way.
After returning to basecamp, we’ll gather for dinner and soak in the quiet mountain air. The evening concludes with a restorative yoga session designed to support recovery and prepare your body for the adventures ahead.
Starting elevation: 10,400 ft
Distance options: 1–10 miles round trip, minimal elevation change
Day 3 - Sunrise Yoga & Hike from Blue Lake
We’ll begin the morning with a peaceful meditation and yoga session, followed by a closing circle to reflect on our time in the mountains and transition out of the retreat experience. After breakfast at camp, we’ll pack up and start our hike back down the trail. The descent offers beautiful morning light and final views across the Sabrina Basin as we make our way toward the trailhead, planning to arrive around lunchtime.
Starting elevation: 10,400 ft
Ending elevation: 9,100 ft
Distance: 3 miles with 1,300 ft loss

Reviews
Durs, John Muir Trail 2025
“The trip exceeded my expectations in that everything and everyone was perfect. The support during the trip and the support given to the guides was excellent…Madeline and Kanyon gave exceptional personal service for 26 days! That is extremely hard to do. They cooked us wonderful breakfast, lunch and dinners for 25 days and satisfied all of us hikers…The best thing I can say about them is that both are the most capable outdoor experts I know (Dave is in this group too). I can’t think of any negatives to the greatest service they provided.”
Becky, Sky Marathon 2025
“Your service exceeded my expectations. This was my first backpacking trip and I felt well prepared in large part to your online resources (training plan, equipment list, route description). Heather was awesome – set a careful pace and was patient and personable…She kept us safe with tips and reminders throughout the trip. I appreciated her reviewing our equipment before we left and teaching me how to pack my bag and set up a tent.”
Paul, Evolution Loop Backpacking Trip
“I went on the 6-day Evolution Loop backpacking trip. I had the time of my life. The scenery was stunningly beautiful. Our guides kept us safe, prepared excellent meals, and were very knowledgeable about the area. They were friendly and kept us informed about what to expect each day. I only wish the trip lasted more days. I’ll be back for more.”
