Trip Overview: Boundary Peak
Boundary Peak, the highest point in Nevada at 13,140 feet is a classic desert summit adventure featuring sweeping views, and—if you’re lucky—a glimpse of wild horses roaming the range. Boundary Peak straddles the Nevada–California border and is comparable in height to many Sierra summits.
Our route follows a mix of faint use trails and open terrain, with talus hopping and easy scrambling along the way. While the climb can be done in a single long day, we prefer to camp the night before near the trailhead to shorten the approach and make the summit day more enjoyable. We typically begin our ascent from either Queen Mine or Trail Canyon.
Because we drive to about 9,850 feet before hiking, spending a night beforehand at 7,000–8,000 feet can greatly improve acclimatization and comfort during the climb.

Acclimatization & Physical Training
For proper acclimatization, we recommend spending at least one night at a moderate elevation (above 8,000 feet) before the trip begins. This allows your body to adjust to higher altitude and can help make hiking feel more comfortable.
See our Fitness, Training & Acclimatization Tips for detailed guidance on how to prepare.

Day 1 – Meet in Bishop and Caravan to the Trailhead
We’ll meet in Bishop at 3:00 p.m. for a gear check and trip overview before caravanning to the trailhead. Depending on road and weather conditions, we’ll begin from either Queen Mine or Trail Canyon. After setting up camp near the trailhead, we’ll enjoy dinner and get to bed early to prepare for an alpine start and to avoid potential afternoon thunderstorms.
Camp elevation: 9,800 ft
Day 2 – Summit Boundary Peak
We’ll start early, hiking toward the Trail Crest saddle from our camp. From there, the route becomes less defined, weaving through loose talus and braided use paths. The final push climbs a steep slope of scree and large talus blocks to the summit ridge, where we scramble the last short section to reach Boundary Peak—the highest point in Nevada at 13,140 feet. After taking in sweeping views across the Great Basin and Sierra Nevada, we’ll descend the same route, aiming to reach the vehicles by mid-afternoon.
Distance: ~10 miles round trip
Elevation gain: ~4,000 ft

Reviews
Durs, John Muir Trail 2025
“The trip exceeded my expectations in that everything and everyone was perfect. The support during the trip and the support given to the guides was excellent…Madeline and Kanyon gave exceptional personal service for 26 days! That is extremely hard to do. They cooked us wonderful breakfast, lunch and dinners for 25 days and satisfied all of us hikers…The best thing I can say about them is that both are the most capable outdoor experts I know (Dave is in this group too). I can’t think of any negatives to the greatest service they provided.”
Becky, Sky Marathon 2025
“Your service exceeded my expectations. This was my first backpacking trip and I felt well prepared in large part to your online resources (training plan, equipment list, route description). Heather was awesome – set a careful pace and was patient and personable…She kept us safe with tips and reminders throughout the trip. I appreciated her reviewing our equipment before we left and teaching me how to pack my bag and set up a tent.”
Paul, Evolution Loop Backpacking Trip
“I went on the 6-day Evolution Loop backpacking trip. I had the time of my life. The scenery was stunningly beautiful. Our guides kept us safe, prepared excellent meals, and were very knowledgeable about the area. They were friendly and kept us informed about what to expect each day. I only wish the trip lasted more days. I’ll be back for more.”
