Wage: overnight rates starting at $300 per day
Job Overview:
Join Sierra Mountain Center as a Backpacking Guide and lead immersive, scenic trips in the Eastern Sierra. Our trips cater to both beginner and experienced hikers, offering guided adventures along renowned routes like the John Muir Trail, in Yosemite, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon National Parks, as well as challenging summits like Mt. Whitney. As a guide, you will be responsible for managing the logistics of each trip, ensuring safety, and sharing your knowledge of the area, Leave No Trace principles, and outdoor skills. Your role will include preparing meals in the backcountry, maintaining group dynamics, and offering expert navigation throughout the journey. You would also have the opportunity to lead mule-supported trips. For these, we hire professional packers to handle the mules. As the guide, you will take the lead in all trip preparation, cooking, and guiding for the guests. With a focus on a positive, inclusive experience, our guides lead with enthusiasm and expertise, ensuring our guests have an unforgettable adventure in the wild.
Key Responsibilities:
- Guiding and leading groups of up to 12 guests on backpacking trips in the Sierra Nevada, ensuring safety and engagement throughout.
- Planning and executing backpacking trips, including pre-trip preparation.
- Educating guests on ecology, Leave No Trace principles, local history, and other relevant topics.
- Managing group dynamics and maintaining a positive, inclusive atmosphere.
- Providing support during emergencies, including first aid or evacuation procedures.
- Assisting with equipment setup, maintenance, and breakdown.
- Opportunity to lead mule supported multi-day trips. We hire packers to handle the mules, while we pack all the food and gear, cook meals, and lead the guests on the trail each day.
Qualifications:
- Wilderness First Responder & CPR required.
- Food Handler’s certification required; can obtain upon employment.
- Experience as backpacking guide strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of Sierra Nevada hiking trails strongly preferred.
- Experience with other types of guiding preferred.
- LNT Trainer preferred.
- Physical fitness to handle demanding trails and carry up to 40 lbs each day.
Skills:
- Strong communication and leadership skills.
- Ability to work with diverse groups in various weather conditions and terrain.
- Navigation skills with map and compass and GPS.
- Experience in meal preparation and backcountry cooking.
- Risk management and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
- Patience, adaptability, and ability to remain calm under pressure.
Working Conditions:
- Overnight trips range from 2 to 26 days in length throughout the Sierra Nevada; average is around 3 to 7 days in length.
- Solo and co-guiding work – dependent on group size, type and length of trips, and experience of guides.
- Summer season is approximately mid-June through mid-September, with potential work earlier and later in the season.
