Acclimatization & Physical Training

Weather
We’ll be keeping a close eye on the weather as we plan for our Mount Whitney summit day. Day 1 – Lone Pine to Chicken Springs Lake
We meet early in the morning in Lone Pine to review gear and trip details, then caravan to the Cottonwood Pass Trailhead. From here, the trail climbs steadily over Cottonwood Pass before descending about half a mile to Chicken Springs Lake, our first night’s camp. There’s plenty of time to settle in, relax, and enjoy the alpine scenery.
Distance: 5 miles Elevation Gain: 1,400 ft
Day 2 – Chicken Springs Lake to Rock Creek
After a short initial climb out of camp, the trail levels out and trends gently downhill for much of the day. We contour above Big Whitney Meadow, enjoying expansive views toward the Kaweah Range, before entering Sequoia–Kings Canyon National Park. The day ends at the lower crossing of Rock Creek, where we make camp for the night.
Distance: 10.5 miles Elevation Gain: 600 ft
Day 3 – Rock Creek to Guitar Lake
Our day begins with a steady climb over Guyot Pass and into the wide-open expanse of Guyot Flat. Staying near treeline, we contour around the basin and make our way into Crabtree Meadows, where we officially join the John Muir Trail. Turning toward Mount Whitney, we continue a gradual climb to our camp overlooking Guitar Lake (11,460 ft), a stunning alpine setting beneath the Whitney massif.
Distance: 10 miles Elevation Gain: 3,100 ft
Day 4 – Mount Whitney Summit Day
We dedicate the entire day to our ascent of Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the continental United States. Leaving our main packs behind, we travel with light daypacks from camp at Guitar Lake. The trail climbs through a series of switchbacks to Trail Crest (13,550 ft), where we meet hikers coming from the east side route. From here, the summit comes into view. The thin air makes for a slow but steady climb, and before long we’re standing on the summit of Mount Whitney, surrounded by sweeping views in every direction. After soaking in the moment and snapping photos, we retrace our steps back down to camp at Guitar Lake.
Distance: 9 miles Elevation Gain: 3,200 ft
Day 5 – Guitar Lake to Tyndall Creek
Heading north, we follow the John Muir Trail over several smaller passes, passing the scenic Wallace and Wright Lakes along the way. The route curves around Tawny Point before reaching Tyndall Creek, where we make camp for the night beneath the towering peaks of the Sierra Crest.
Distance: 10 miles Elevation Gain: 1,900 ft
Day 6 – Tyndall Creek to Shepherd Pass Trailhead
Today is our biggest day, so we start early. From camp, we follow Tyndall Creek into its headwaters high above treeline, then make the final climb to Shepherd Pass (12,000 ft). From the top, the views across the Owens Valley are breathtaking. We begin a long, steady descent of over 6,000 feet to reach the Shepherd Pass Trailhead, where our shuttle will be waiting to take you back to your vehicles at Cottonwood Pass.
Distance: 14 miles Elevation Gain: 1,900 ft Elevation Loss: 6,300 ft

Reviews
Durs, John Muir Trail 2025
“The trip exceeded my expectations in that everything and everyone was perfect. The support during the trip and the support given to the guides was excellent…Madeline and Kanyon gave exceptional personal service for 26 days! That is extremely hard to do. They cooked us wonderful breakfast, lunch and dinners for 25 days and satisfied all of us hikers…The best thing I can say about them is that both are the most capable outdoor experts I know (Dave is in this group too). I can’t think of any negatives to the greatest service they provided.”
Becky, Sky Marathon 2025
“Your service exceeded my expectations. This was my first backpacking trip and I felt well prepared in large part to your online resources (training plan, equipment list, route description). Heather was awesome – set a careful pace and was patient and personable…She kept us safe with tips and reminders throughout the trip. I appreciated her reviewing our equipment before we left and teaching me how to pack my bag and set up a tent.”
Paul, Evolution Loop Backpacking Trip
“I went on the 6-day Evolution Loop backpacking trip. I had the time of my life. The scenery was stunningly beautiful. Our guides kept us safe, prepared excellent meals, and were very knowledgeable about the area. They were friendly and kept us informed about what to expect each day. I only wish the trip lasted more days. I’ll be back for more.”
