Guided Backcountry Skiing
Trip Overview: Guided Backcountry Skiing
Discover the thrill of guided backcountry skiing in the Eastern Sierra. From long spring corn runs to iconic ski descents off the region’s high peaks, our certified guides tailor each trip to your skills and goals. Whether you’re new to ski touring and want a supportive introduction, or an experienced skier looking for big alpine objectives, Sierra Mountain Center helps you explore some of the finest backcountry skiing terrain in North America.
We maintain a flexible itinerary, adjusting to snow conditions, weather, and group goals. Each day’s objectives are chosen in real time, drawing on our guides’ deep local knowledge and current conditions. If you have a particular ski descent or peak in mind, let us know—we’ll try to make it happen!
Prerequisites
Because this is a private trip, we can adapt the day to your group’s skills and goals—ranging from an introductory tour to a full alpine objective. No previous backcountry skiing or splitboarding experience is required.
However, participants should meet the following guidelines:
- Advanced resort skills: You should be an expert skier or snowboarder at the resort level, confident on ungroomed terrain and in variable, challenging conditions.
- Fitness: You should be prepared for a full 8-hour active day, able to hike 3–5 miles with 2,000–3,000 feet of elevation gain while carrying a pack.
Acclimatization: Trips take place at high elevation, so arriving fit, well-conditioned, and acclimatized will help you move efficiently and enjoy the experience.
Our guides adjust objectives based on conditions and group ability, creating a rewarding experience for every team.
Winter Guided Backcountry Skiing
Winter in the Sierra brings a wide range of snow conditions. Tours this time of year often involve shorter daylight hours, colder temperatures, and longer approaches on skis to reach good terrain. Depending on the snowpack and weather, descents may be in open bowls, sheltered trees, or alpine gullies. Because winter conditions can be demanding, we choose objectives carefully with avalanche hazard, weather, and group goals in mind.
Spring Guided Backcountry Skiing
Springtime holds the Sierra’s prime skiing conditions. Our day begins early, embarking while the snow is still firm to ensure smoother travel. We strategically time our descent for optimal conditions, aiming for pristine corn snow. Our goal is to complete our adventure before the snow softens and becomes less ideal for skiing. We aim for about 4,000 feet of vertical feet but we are happy to do more or less based on your goals.
Gear
You’ll need standard ski touring gear (skis with touring bindings or a splitboard, climbing skins, boots), avalanche safety gear (beacon, probe, shovel), and appropriate clothing for winter mountain travel.
We provide group gear such as emergency equipment and communication devices. If you don’t have avalanche safety gear, we offer beacons, shovels, and probes for rent for $10 each. Skis and splitboards can be rented locally from Mammoth Mountaineering Supply.

Come Prepared for Guided Backcountry Skiing
During your trip, we’ll spend several hours outdoors in cold, windy, or potentially inclement weather. To stay comfortable and safe, make sure to bring plenty of extra layers to adapt to changing conditions. Check out our full equipment list for details.
To help your body adjust to the altitude, we recommend spending at least one night at a moderate elevation (above 8,000 feet) before the course begins. For detailed tips on acclimatization and physical training, check out the “Resources” tab on our website.

Reviews
Michael, AIARE II
“Hey all! I recently took AIARE 2 with SP Parker and I have to admit it was fantastic! He showed so much passion for his craft and “patience” with us. It truly showed in the 3 days we spent together that he cares about what he does. He is so knowledgeable about snow science and in particular Eastern Sierra snow that I highly recommend participating in his course if you’re a frequenter of this magical mountain range. Can’t thank you enough and will most surely use the lessons learned in this course to be a more safe and conscious backcountry traveler.”

“Anouk was a terrific educator and guide during the avy rescue clinic- very experienced. Good natured and supportive. Expertly managed our group. We all got a ton of practice and had a nice day out in the field. I’ll be coming back for more avy training.”
Stefanos, AIARE I
“I got my avalanche education here (AIARE1). The team I met, Anouk, Tyler and Emma, is fantastic. I greatly appreciated their attitude and the experience they provided. Will be back for more soon.”
