In the Sierra Nevada, river crossings can pose challenges, even on well-traveled trails such as the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and John Muir Trail (JMT). River crossing skills are crucial for both novice hikers and experienced mountaineers.

We will teach you skills needed to feel comfortable executing a safe river crossing as an individual hiker, in a small group of 2, and in a group of 3-5 individuals. You will gain an understanding of river features, as well as survival swimming techniques.

We will also learn to answer the following questions:

  • Should we cross?
  • Where do we cross?
  • How do we cross?

During spring in the Sierra Nevada, falls on snowfields and in river crossings present the greatest hazards. Therefore, we also recommend our snow travel skills course.
